Exploring ICT use among LGBTQ+ migrants
Over 40% of all LGBTQ+ migrants in the U.S. are between the ages of 18-29 years old, a life stage associated with high risk of mental health issues and substance use disorders. These migrants also struggle with issues related to their sexuality, gender identity, and their migrant status. No studies have examined this group, despite the unique set of challenges they face.

01
Objective
The goal of this study was to generate understanding of how young LGBTQ+ migrants use information and communication technology (ICT) to migrate to and integrate in the U.S.
02
Process
An interview guide with questions about the participants' ICT use throughout their life was developed. I interviewed participants via Zoom and guided the conversation. Participants shared stories about how ICTs played a role in their personal development, their decision to immigrate to the U.S., and their integration into U.S. society.

After, I synthesized and analyzed the results, I generated insights that were reported in published articles and presented at national and international conferences.

03
Participants
I interviewed over 25 participants for this project. I coordinated another 15 interviews which were conducted by collaborators. All participants were LGBTQ+ migrants between 18 and 25 years old.
04
Results
Based on the results of the interviews, two applied solutions are recommended:
-
Formal immigration resources need to establish strong online presence, especially on social media and including use of search engine optimization.
-
Clinical practitioners should be educated on the role of ICTs in the development and resettlement of LGBTQ+ migrants.
